School Health Interdisciplinary Program (SHIP)

Mission Statement:

A SHIP volunteer must be committed to and passionate about improving the health of elementary students. Volunteering with SHIP is a fun and exciting experience, but one that requires significant commitment and dedication. Volunteers are responsible for not only teaching health curricula, but leading and engaging the students in outdoor games and activities to emphasize the importance of staying active and fit!

 


Goals:

The goals of the School Health Interdisciplinary Program include teaching and tutoring elementary school students to achieve academic success and promote healthy lifestyles. Health topics include nutrition, physical activity, stress management, importance of sleep, dental health, hand washing, injury prevention and safety topics, etc..


Join the SHIP Crew:

Volunteers teach elementary school students about various health topics such as nutrition, physical activity, stress management, importance of sleep, dental health, hand washing, injury prevention and safety topics, etc. Volunteers assist with teaching the Health Curriculum on hand washing, bullying, eating properly, etc. Volunteers will also lead students in physical activities to teach kids the importance of staying fit!

Volunteer Requirements:

  • Complete an online application
  • Attend ONE of the mandatory volunteer training sessions
    • Spring 2016: January 19th OR January 20th from 3:00-6:00pm in FLG 250
  • Commit to volunteering at a site at least 1 day/week for the entire semester
  • Attend monthly general body meetings (three total for semester; can only miss ONE)
  • Volunteer must be responsible for their own transportation.
