Eta Sigma Gamma
What is Eta Sigma Gamma (ESG)?
ESG is the national professional health education honorary founded on the campus of Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, on August 14, 1967. The Alpha Lambda Chapter at the University of Florida was founded in 1978 under the leadership of Dr. Barbara Rienzo. Our local chapter enhances the professional development of students while upholding the ideals of teaching, service, and research both individually and collectively.
Benefits of Membership
ESG provides unique professional and leadership opportunities for Health Education and Behavior majors. Students have the opportunity to gain experience as a health educator during their studies, while giving back to the campus and Gainesville communities. ESG members are afforded the opportunity to gain experience in health education/health promotion while developing connections and networking skills that will prepare them for future careers in the health field.
The Alpha Lambda chapter collectively earned more than 1300 hours of service through health education/health promotion events and activities with the UF and Gainesville communities on several topics: sexual health, HIV/AIDS prevention, nutrition and fitness, body image, sleep, safety, and many more.
How do I join?
New members are required to contribute $40 annually to defray local chapter expenses. The membership dues also include an official membership t-shirt designed for our local chapter. Membership forms should be submitted to FLG-11, or to an executive board member at a chapter meeting.
National Chapter Induction
Alpha Lambda members also have the opportunity to join the Eta Sigma Gamma National Chapter. Interested members must meet participation minimums for the Alpha Lambda chapter, as well as have a 2.7 HSC coursework GPA. National Chapter membership cost $50 annually, and applications are due by March 1. Approved Alpha Lambda members will be formally inducted into the National Chapter at the end of the spring semester each year.
